Colleen & Tom's Explorations
Today was a big day - and it was only a morning tour, but it was a walking tour! Which would have been fine, one week ago, but alas, not this week! Tom hunted and gathered from the Scottish restaurant for breakfast once again, and mindful of the request for less, returned with something unidentifiable, along with a coffee and a hash brown. The burger, whose name he knew not, had lettuce, and cheese, and a pattie that seemed to be chicken, but also grated carrot and corn, with a Thousand Island dressing! Bizarre, I know! We walked down to the hotel in the next block to meet up with our tour guide and our fellow-tourists. Today we had a couple from Toronto, Canada; a family with three daughters (including 23 year old fraternal twins) from Buenos Aires, Argentina; and a lovely couple expecting their first baby in July, from Brisbane! We crossed the road to the station and caught a Kinki Nippon Railway local train to Momoyamagoryo-Mae Station, from where we walked quite a long way to the Gekkeikan Okura Sake museum. We were shown a film on the making of sake, and then given a tour of the sake museum. This area of Kyoto has very pure spring water which is great for making sake, and their were many sake makers in the area. We were given 3 tastings of very different sakes. We then caught a Keihan Electric Railway train from Fushimi-Momoyama Station to Fushimi-Inari Station, where we then walked, with many other tourists, to the Fushimi Inari Shrine, the head Shinto Shrine in Japan. It was far more crowded than yesterday's shrine, and it's a weekday! Very very busy! We then caught a JR train back to Kyoto. So, three different railway companies in one outing. They all have different tickets, different platforms, and sometimes different stations!! I was so pleased to get back to our hotel. My knee was very bad today, but of course, it was 1pm and the room hadn't been cleaned. So we sat in the lounge for 30 minutes, until the apologetic girl came and told us we could use our room. We see a pattern setting in. Maybe we should take our key with us tomorrow and put "Do Not Disturb" on the door? No flash coffee for us today. After resting in our room we ventured out for dinner, choosing to eat in a German bar, staffed by Japanese people. We dined on Italian pizza (as opposed to German Potato Pizza, which also sounded tasty) and chicken and vegetable au gratin, washed down with a couple of lowenbrau beers for Tom and a couple of glasses of German white wine for me. Tom was disappointed with the small serving size (pub snacks), so we took ourselves to the lovely restaurant we saw last night with models of waffles in the window. Very tasty! Things to mention: we've seen TimTams for sale in at least three places. Yesterday in a little convenience store on the railway concourse we saw Jacobs Creek, Orlando and Wyndham Estate wines. The Argentinian girls were telling me that when a girl turns 15 in Argentina she can choose to have a party, or travel.. The twins chose travel and they went to the UK, France and Spain. The current 15 year old chose travel to Japan, AND a party - they said she was spoilt! The whole family takes part in the travel...

Liz Sorry to hear your knee is playing up....very unfair of it. Your tour party sound very interesting - love the idea that, in the eyes of the twins the 15 year old is spoilt - haa haa. How I wish that was I so unspoilt that I could only go to Europe and not have a party. Some of your eating experiences have been unusual
Sophie Sounds like quite an experience! Your travelling companions sound very interesting! A pity about the knee - you must be ready to chop it off. You are doing awesomely Mum - still getting out and sight seeing but don't be afraid to rest yourself.
